Our Fire/Arson Investigators are responsible for investigating fires and explosions in the unincorporated areas of Travis County, examining fire scenes to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

Arson is a serious crime and is the second leading cause of residential fire deaths! National statistics indicate that one out of every four fires is arson, killing 500 people and causing an estimated $900 million in property damage each year.

Arson in Travis County is in line with national statistics, accounting for approximately 20% of all fires investigated by the Travis County Fire Marshal's Office.

First, Confirm there is NO BURN BAN  in place.

Second, review the FAQs for outdoor burning provided by the Travis Co. Fire Marshal. 

Three, please fill out this form and submit no less than 48 prior to ignition. The Travis County Fire Marshal's office and the Austin Fire Department dispatchers will be notified. 

NOTE: All information provided is subject to verification via photographs or site inspections.

Wildfire Prevention and Mitigation programs are provided by the Austin Fire Department's Wildfire Division.

The Travis County Fire Marshal's office handles the fire protection aspects of building permits and plan review. Please contact them. 

Also, the Travis County Transportation and Natural Resources (TNR) system operates the larger permitting database that the Fire Marshal's office works through. 

The Austin Fire Department will handle these requests using the following guidelines.

1. All requests for any AFD incident report must be submitted via the form linked below.

2. An AFD agent will endeavor to provide the requested information within ten (10) days from time request was received. Copy charges are 10 cents per page.

3. Due to the volume of requests, AFD incident reports are not faxed to the requester. Receipt of information is available via pickup, U.S. mail, or overnight mail on the requester’s account number.

4. Additional fees may be applicable dependent on the nature of the request.
